چکیده

This paper is focused on the recovery of the vertical structure of forested areas from multi-baseline and multipolarimetric SAR surveys at P-Band and L-Band. Results will be shown basing on both P-Band and L-Band airborne data relative to the forested areas within the Krycklan catchment, Norther Sweden, collected in the framework of the ESA campaign BioSAR 2008. The spaceborne case is also considered, basing on simulated BioMass data. The analysis has been carried out by exploiting the Algebraic Synthesis technique, recently introduced in literature, which bases on the joint exploitation of baseline and polarization diversity. Baseline diversity provides sensitivity to the vertical structure of the vegetation layer, resulting in the possibility to yield Tomographic reconstructions of forested areas. Yet, the synthesis yields far more information basing on the joint exploitation of baseline and polarization diversity, resulting in the decomposition of the SAR signal into groundonly and volume-only contributions. Ground-only contributions provide an easy and viable way to phase calibrate the data stack. Volume-only contributions, if correctly identified, allow a direct Tomographic imaging of the vegetation layer.

Improvement of Biomass Estimation in Forest Areas based on Polarimetric Parameters Optimization of SETHI airborne Data using Particle Swarm Optimization Method

Estimation of forest biomass has received much attention in recent decades. Airborne and spaceborne (SAR) have a great potential to quantify biomass and structural diversity because of its penetration capability. Polarizations are important elements in SAR systems due to sensitivity of them to backscattering mechanisms and can be useful to estimate biomass. Full Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture ...

Experiments of Tomography-based Sar Techniques with P-band Polarimetric Data

New opportunities are arising in the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) observation of forest scenarios, especially with decimetric and metric radio wavelengths, which possess the capability of penetrating into volumes. Given its capabilities in the three-dimensional imaging of the scattering properties of the observed scene, SAR Tomography (Tomo-SAR) constitutes a good candidate for the analysis o...

Decrease of L-band SAR backscatter with biomass of dense forests

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is one of the most promising remote sensors to map forest carbon. The unique spaceborne and longwavelength SAR data currently available are L-band data, but their relationship with forest biomass is still controversial, particularly for high biomass values. While many studies assume a complete loss of sensitivity above a saturation point, typically around 100 t.ha...

Sensitivity of L-Band SAR Backscatter to Aboveground Biomass of Global Forests

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) backscatter measurements are sensitive to forest aboveground biomass (AGB), and the observations from space can be used for mapping AGB globally. However, the radar sensitivity saturates at higher AGB values depending on the wavelength and geometry of radar measurements, and is influenced by the structure of the forest and environmental conditions. Here, we examin...

Forest Height Estimates for Boreal Forest Using L- and X-band Polinsar and Hutscat Scatterometer

In this paper we present a airborne polarimetric interferometric SAR measurement campaign, carried out in Finland in 2003. The main aim of the FinSAR campaign was to validate POLinSAR tree height retrieval algorithms for boreal forest and it was arranged jointly by Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) and German Aerospace Center (DLR) Microwaves and Radar Institute. During the campaign airbo...
